The first foreign settlers in Jinja before independence were Indians and people of Asian origin. Most came to Jinja because of trade and to work for the British colonial administrators in factories and during the construction of the railway line. Later, these Indians settled and opened up shops or factories.
When the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada expelled them out of Uganda in 1972, they left behind buildings and industries.
